1. Do Your Own "Bounce" Test
Mechanic shops often use a variety of tests to determine if there is something wrong with your suspension. One easy test that you can do yourself is known as the "bounce" test. Simply turn your vehicle off and put it in park. Then, get out and stand at the front of your vehicle. Using all of your weight, press down on the front end of your car. If your car continues to "bounce" more than two or three times after you let it go, it's a strong indication that there's a suspension problem to be worried about.
2. Take a Look at Your Tires
It's a good time to check your tires every now and then anyway, and taking a quick look at them can help you determine if your vehicle has a suspension issue. Simply look at your tires from the side and run your hands over the exposed part of the treads. Your tires should wear out relatively evenly. If you notice that there are a few bald spots in random places, or if your tread simply seems to be wearing out unevenly, it could be because uneven pressure is being applied to your tires; this can come from your suspension carrying your vehicle unevenly.
3. Slam on Brakes
When it is safe to do so, apply the brake firmly. If your vehicle seems to take a "nose dive," such as by lurching downward and forward simultaneously, it could be due to a suspension issue. This isn't just uncomfortable and unsightly; it can also affect your vehicle's ability to stop properly, so it's actually quite dangerous and should be looked at as soon as possible.
There are a few ways that professionals assess vehicles for suspension problems, but these simple tests can be done quickly at home.
